Burnaby Remembers: BC Day Display

Tom Gooden has been researching items in the Museum's collection for a special display titled "Burnaby Remembers" for the upcoming BC Day event. One of the items he located was a photograph of the unveiling of the memorial fountain, which is currently on display at the Village next to the church.

The Civic Memorial Fountain recognizes Burnaby municipal staff who were casualties of the First World War. The fountain was originally located in front of Burnaby’s municipal hall at Kingsway and Edmonds, and was sponsored by the Burnaby Civic Employees Union.

The fountain was dedicated June 17, 1923. It was made from British Columbia granite by William Williamson, a local stone mason. It was unveiled by Dora Wilcox, whose father, Ernest Wilcox, was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The fountain was re-dedicated when it was moved to Burnaby Village Museum in 1974. Dora Wilcox, who was 84 at the time, unveiled the fountain for a second time.
